The Digital Portfolio Development course (FILM-252) takes all that a student has learned and experienced – through life as well as formal education – and brings it together into a professional presentation highlighting their video/film accomplishments.
The class is designed to help prepare students majoring in Digital Media/Film Studies to successfully transfer to a four-year bachelor’s program in Video Production or Film Studies, or to join the workforce as Video/Film professionals.
The course covers topics such as critical thinking in digital media and film, career options, writing essays that examine the students’ influences, motivations, and goals, job application letters, submitting films to screenings and film festivals, and the materials needed for transfer applications. Students compose their resume and engage in interview simulations to gain insight into the practical side of building a career, and they design their logo and website to begin establishing their professional identity.
Each student compiles a video demo reel showing excerpts of their best work, and the class culminates with presentation of their portfolio reel and statement. The reels highlight the students’ career-specific skills, and the statements provide an opportunity for them to discuss their passion for film and video.
This website presents their reels and statements.
Teaching our future digital media professionals is a rewarding adventure, and I look forward to working with the RVCC students every semester to help them reach their amazing potential. I am a firm believer that students should be both well prepared for their career and love what they do, and these reels highlight the skill and passion our students have for their work.
