STATEMENT
With a passion for videography, I hope to grow within a filmmaking or video program. I earned my Digital Video Production Certificate and completed an internship in a film studio while in college. Also, I volunteered for a non-profit organization and filmed their social events.

I have been following YouTube for most of my life. As an adult with high functioning Autism, I always know in my mind what I am thinking and want to say, but I cannot always communicate clearly. YouTube is an outlet for people to ease into communication. When I talk in person, it is “real time” dialog. When I communicate with people on YouTube, the wall of embarrassment comes down and there is no judgment. It can be uncomfortable to speak in public; one way to remove fear is to begin conversation without physical presence which builds confidence. Through YouTube, I respond when I am able. Imagine being able to pause conversation at the exact moment you don’t understand something. The other person on YouTube might just think you walked away or had a computer glitch. It allows people to pick up a conversation where it left off and allows us to proceed at our own speed. When information can be recorded and re-played, such as on YouTube, conversations can end abruptly without stigma and then be picked back up again.

Video study has inspired me, and YouTube’s ability to record gaming in mid-action and then later played makes it perfect for the viewer to take control. By both recording and live-streaming, comments become an anonymous art form. Virtual connections and friendships come without expectations; it is understood that online relationships are temporary and for entertainment purposes. My goal is to show the results of all the individual competitions that have ended so that the once-livestreamed game becomes a form of entertainment itself. I hope to be a well-known video entertainer on YouTube. I am happy to reach out to others on YouTube, knowing that I can be “heard” without my learning differences.

During my internship, I worked on editing for sports and weddings on Final Cut Pro. I used Adobe Premiere Pro for storyboards, videos, and final edits. I would like to support the social media space for entertainment at college. I visualize a gaming niche that intertwines live action with multiple participants. This connection will benefit the university’s program by expanding it to include students from other universities and using footage to generate entertainment pieces. Just as athletic events are played between competing universities, gaming competitions can be included among other school competitions and watched repeatedly. Gaming is here to stay!

I imagine a time when self-expression through gaming and film is taken to new heights for any misunderstood populations. I believe the gaming space can be a crucial and beneficial part of advancement for those with communication disorders, and for those without a large circle of friendships, the world of reality gaming provides a fun space to learn and grow and belong.
