Selma is often surrounded by people different from herself since there are not that many Bosnian Muslim communities. Plus, she lives in a diverse town. She enjoys talking to people different from herself and takes opportunities to learn about a wide variety of people. Their cultures, their religions, and their values, all fascinate her. It’s beautiful that people know and understand their own community, however, she thinks we should take the time to learn about others who are unlike ourselves.
Her dream is to do a series of documentaries around the world. She wants to learn about distinct cultures, histories, and peoples. Most of all, she wants to share them with her audience. She is progressive. She believes the world will become a better place if we build bridges rather than walls. Of course, she is willing to start small in order to reach this goal.
STATEMENT
Information is expressed to audiences via the media, whether the purpose of the content is solely for entertainment or to be informative. Media can be used to manipulate audiences to think a certain way, which can be a bad or good thing. On one side, someone could misrepresent a group of people. An example which has directly affected me as a Muslim is how terrorism is often associated with Islam in media. Although Islam advocates for peace, larger media stations often glaze over this fact. This gives audiences “tunnel vision” as to who we are. The same limitations happen with other minority groups.
However, there is a light side to the media. Content can be used to make audiences react with harmless emotion: happiness, sadness, wholesomeness, to name a few. My goal is to make audiences feel emotions while gaining an understanding of the topic presented. Referring again to misrepresentation of Muslims in media, I created a documentary about this topic. It starts in a depressing tone, with what news anchors and public figures have said. Then it shifts to an uplifting tone, ending with the facts given by both Muslims and public figures. For future projects, I want to entertain and inform audiences through my content all while exploring different groups of people, focusing on learning about their culture, history, and ideologies. My goal is for the audience to gain a better understanding of these groups by creating media focusing on the positives about people and their lives.
